About the International Florence Biennale
More than 2000 artists have been selected to participate in the Florence Biennale since it's inauguration in 1997. The Biennale is organized under the high patronage of the president of the Italian Republic and has won the official endorsement of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Region of Tuscany, the City of Florence, and embassies internationally.
In collaboration with the United Nations, the Florence Biennaleis an official participant in the "Dialogue Among Civilizations" program. In the words of Kofi Annan: "Artists have a special role to play in the global struggle for peace. At their best, artists speak not only to people; they speak for them. Art is a weapon against ignorance and hatred and an agent of public awareness... Art opens new doors for learning, understanding, and peace among people and nations."
The Lorenzo de' Medici medal was awarded to Bill Jonas for his painting "Lebensborn" at the 2003 Florence Biennale.
